Mustangs Sweep Series with Eutectics

HOT SPRINGS, ARK. – Monday was the Day 2 of the two-day four-game American Midwest Conference (AMC) baseball series featuring the Central Baptist College Mustangs (6-8, 4-0 AMC) hosting the UHSP Eutectic baseball team in Majestic Park located in Hot Springs, Ark. After winning both games on Sunday, the Mustangs swept the series after 4-3 and 7-2 victories on Monday afternoon.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
CBC 4, UHSP 3

  • After three innings, the Mustangs held a 2-0 with two hits.
  • The score remained through the fourth and fifth innings until, at the top of the sixth, Jacob Grim's three-run homer to left center put the Eutectics in the lead. It was Grim's second home run of the season so far, scoring Jordan Gonzalez (who was pinch-running for Ethan Harrell's double) and Brandon Gibbs (who reached on a fielder's choice).
  • The Mustangs charged back in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 3-3 with an RBI double from George Astacio.
  • The Eutectics were unable to score in the top of the seventh, and in the bottom of the inning the Mustangs took advantage of two UHSP errors to push the required run across the plate to secure a 4-3 home-team win.
  • Led by Jacob Grim's 2-for-3 performance at the plate, the Eutectics collected four hits to the Mustangs' three. But, the UHSP defense recorded four errors to CBC's one.
  • Starting UHSP pitcher Tristan Calmes put in 5.1 innings, striking out seven, walking four, allowing three hits, and recording three earned runs. Reliever Gavin Long was charged with the loss after one inning, tallying two strikeouts and no earned runs.
  • Reliever Jaxon Kirkhuff earned the win for the Mustangs, allowing one hit in his one inning on the mound.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
CBC 7, UHSP 2

  • The Mustangs scored first in the bottom of the fourth with two runs off a bases-loaded single by Garrett Fitts.
  • With the Eutectics still scoreless, CBC scored another five runs in the bottom of the sixth off four hits against UHSP pitcher Jackson Wininger to go up 7-0.
  • The Eutectics finally marked the board in their last at-bat, sending Ruben Ogando and Nolan Harding across home plate with RBIs from Matthew McDonald and Deklan Riggs to make it 7-2. The late offensive rally, however, was not enough to catch the Mustangs, who were able to get the final out and secure the victory without batting again.
  • Ruben Ogando went 2-for-2 from the plate, adding one run and a walk. UHSP's Jackson Wininger pitched five innings, striking out two, walking one, and allowing seven hits and five earned runs to be charged with the loss. CBC's Dylan Parton picked up the win with three strikeouts, two walks, one hit, and no runs in four innings. Ryan Meyer was credited with the save after three innings, including four strikeouts, three hits, and two earned runs.

Now 3-8 overall and 0-4 in the AMC, the Eutectic team will travel to Fulton, Mo., on Wednesday, Feb. 26, for a non-conference single game against NCAA Division III Westminster University (4-3) at 6 p.m.
