Mustangs Drop Five Set Match To Pioneers

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Paragould, Ark. – Playing for the 40th time in series history, Central Baptist College volleyball was on the road tonight at the Carter Activities Center for a midweek tile with Crowley's Ridge College. CBC (1-4) won the first two sets before dropping the final three to lose 3-2 to CRC (3-1).

Three Mustangs finished with double-doubles, as Brooke Schmitz and Madie Stephenson both registered the first of their careers with Madeline Freeman posting her second of the season and the 11th of her career. Mikayla Lawrence led the way in digs with 31, her fifth career match with 30 digs or more.

GAME FLOW

CBC trailed 8-7 after 15 rallies in set one, but took the lead on a kill by Freeman. CBC would lead from there, clinching the set win, 25-21, on a ball handling error by CRC's setter. The Mustangs never trailed in the second set, leading by as much as 20-12 before winning 25-15 to go up 2-0. CBC struggled in the third set, dropping the first eight points before falling 13-25. The Pioneers led 19-10 in set four before CBC came storming back, winning 14 of the next 19 points to tie the set at 24. A service error and a ball handling error set up a dramatic fifth between the two sides. In set five, the teams traded the first six points before CBC fell behind 3-6. CBC fought back, however, and a kill by Stephenson made it 12-13. Unfortunately, a kill by CRC and an attack error gave the Pioneers the match and dropped CBC to 29-11 all-time against their in-state rivals.
