Mustangs Split With Hornets

Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

St. Louis, Mo. – Looking to stay in a tie for first place in the American Midwest Conference, Central Baptist College baseball opened a four-game series against Harris-Stowe State University with a doubleheader at Stars Park. CBC (16-13, 13-5 AMC) split with HSSU (5-19, 3-15 AMC) winning game one 8-5 before dropping game two 4-2.

GAME ONE – CBC 8, HSSU 5

Ryan Dauphinee led off the game with a solo home run on the first pitch, his fifth of the season, and the Mustangs led 1-0 after one. CBC tacked on three more runs in the second courtesy of a single by George Astacio and a two-run error off the bat of Brayden Mayencourt. CBC would take a 7-0 lead in the sixth on a steal by Garrett Fitts and an error that allowed him to score and a two-run home run by Chett McDaniel, his second of the year. Jaxon Kirkhuff would bring home the final run with a groundout in the seventh, which was more than enough for Ryan Meyer, who improved to 5-0 with six-and-one-third innings of four hit baseball with a walk and three strikeouts. Landon Hitchcock came in to get the final two outs and recorded his second save, striking out the final batter of the game to preserve the win.

GAME TWO – HSSU 4, CBC 2

Game two was much more of a pitcher's dual as neither team scored until the third inning. CBC struck first when an error gave them a 1-0 lead in the top half. HSSU would put up three in the bottom half of the third to lead 3-1 and the lead stayed that way until the sixth when CBC saw the deficit climb to 4-1. Chett McDaniel would bring in a run with a groundout in the seventh, but the Mustangs got no closer.
