Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director

Blue Mountain, Miss. – Opening the 2024-25 season on the road, #14 Central Baptist College men's basketball was at Tyler Gymnasium tonight to face the Toppers of Blue Mountain Christian University. #14 CBC (1-0) led by two at halftime and had to comeback multiple times in the second half to beat BMCU (0-1) 79-76.

Jonas Carlisle led the way for CBC with 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, 15 of his 20 points coming in the first half. Sage Borbon, Keryn Collins, Wade Williams and Gabe Johnson also finished in double figures, with Borbon and Collins both scoring 13, Williams put up 11 and Johnson finished with 10 points. The big difference in the game was the free throw line and in rebounding, where CBC was plus-nine at the stripe (27-18) and +16 on the glass (34-18).

GAME FLOW

The game featured eight ties and 14 lead changes and saw CBC take a 43-41 lead into halftime. The Toppers blitzed the Mustangs right out of the locker room, scoring the first five points of the half to put CBC down three quickly. As they did all night, however, the Mustangs responded, scoring the next six points to retake the lead at 49-46. A 7-0 run followed for BMCU and CBC responded again, going up 59-55 with 12:13 left. The lead would stretch to 69-60 with 6:16 to play after Carlisle's layup, which was the final field goal for 5:02 for the Mustangs. BMCU would then go on an 11-0 run to put CBC down 71-69 with 1:59 left before Borbon came in clutch at the free throw line, four-out-of-five to put CBC back in front 73-71 with 1:55 left. BMCU would briefly retake a 74-73 lead before a layup by Williams put CBC back in front to stay at 75-74 with 1:06 left. Borbon would then go 4-4 at the line down the stretch to put the Mustangs in the win column.
